Swans Reflecting Elephants, 1937, oil on canvas, is easily recognisable as a Dali painting. It comes from what he termed his “Paranoic-critical” period. Inspired by Freud, Dali would induce a state of paranoia to allow his brain to create unseen links between objects.
As with the earlier Metamorphosis of Narcissus, Swans Reflecting Elephants uses the reflection in a lake to create the double image seen in the painting. In Metamorphosis, the reflection of Narcissus is used to mirror the shape of the hand on the right of the picture.

In the “Swans Reflecting Elephants”, Salvador Dali portrays three dust grey swans. The way director, Matthew Bourne, interprets the ballet, is very interesting. Instead of a conflict with female swans, Bourne casts all males to star in his production.
